Location: Simpsonville, South Carolina Price: $10.75 million

Belle Terre is a lavish gentleman’s farm set on 38 lushly landscaped acres, complete with 14 pet cows, a two-acre pond, a tree house and a vineyard.

The South Carolina estate, whose name means "Beautiful Earth" in French, was built in 2015 on what had once been a wheat farm.

"It’s the highest-priced property to ever be for sale in the Upstate area," said listing agent Joan Herlong of Joan Herlong & Associates/Sotheby’s International Realty.

The sellers, Lynn and Mike McBride, are looking for a smaller place in South Carolina now that their children are grown. "We have a home in the Bahamas and want to travel," Ms. McBride said.

Ms. Herlong said that when the McBrides bought the property, "there was nothing here but two mature trees, crabgrass and mud. But you’d never know it’s only five years old because the plantings are mature and the landscaping is in scale with the house."

The landscaping starts with an avenue of sycamore trees that leads to the main house, where a circular drive encloses an enormous green space.

"Originally, they planted mature oak trees, but they didn’t do well, so they replaced them with the sycamore trees, which are used in all the great boulevards of Europe," Ms. Herlong said, adding that "their huge, gold, broad leaves are beautiful 12 months of the year."

She noted that the privacy hedge around the pool house comprises tea olive shrubs that "have a wonderful fragrance."

Ms. McBride said that it gave her great satisfaction to landscape the estate from the ground up.

"It was a labor of love," she said. "We poured our heart, soul and finances into it."

Stats

The 12,437-square-foot house has six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and four half bathrooms. There’s also a 1,400-square-foot guest apartment. Ms. Herlong noted that when the square footages of the outbuildings and the double-decker verandas are added, the estate’s total comes to some 30,000 square feet.

Amenities

The property has a 10-car attached garage, a detached three-car garage/barn/office, a two-acre stocked pond, a vineyard, a pole barn, a greenhouse, a tree house, a gunite pool, a spa, two fire pits, two covered verandahs and a pool house with a full kitchen, laundry and bath. The house has a wine cellar and a paneled library/office.

Neighborhood Notes

Simpsonville, located in the rolling hills of northwestern South Carolina, is a suburb of Greenville. "There are still areas of it that are rural in character," Ms. Herlong said.

Calling it "a small town outside a larger town," Ms. McBride said Simpsonville is convenient: Between Charlotte and Atlanta, it’s 15 minutes from the amenities of Downtown Greenville and 10 minutes to the international airport. "But there’s not as much hustle and bustle," she said.
