Property Description

Described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as an important component of the domestic built heritage of County Mayo, it is listed as having a high quality of workmanship and artistic composition.

Glenmore was built in 1790 with stone quarried from the nearby woodlands. It was owned by William Knox Orme until the house and lands were purchased by Godfrey Fetherstonehaugh in 1853. In a way, this kept Glenmore in the family as Fetherstonehaugh's mother had been one of the Ormes. During this time, fourteen men, three housemaids and a cook looked after the house, on an average wage of 5 pennies per day.
The land commission reassigned various acreages of Glenmore's original holdings, although the house still retains c.165 acres. These include woodlands, which have been added to by the current owners, who planted more than 20,000 native trees (mainly oak) over 10 hectares in 2009.
The next owner after the Featherstonehaughs, Major Aldridge kept the house until he moved to nearby Mount Falcon Estate. With a great interest in local history, he collected stories for the Folklore Commission. Subsequent owners maintained the role of the house in the community, and within Ireland.
Glenmore House
Opening to the ground floor, Glenmore's gracious hallway includes a fan-lit door, moulded plasterwork and ceiling rose, and a beautiful curving staircase, sweeping to the upper level. To the right is a charming dual aspect study, and beyond this an elegant dining room.
To the left, a wood-panelled music room leads to a lovely light-filled drawing room, which in turn opens to the very spacious conservatory. This has decorative metal work, an irrigated planting bed, vaulted curvilinear glass roof and Liscannor stone flagged floor. Throughout the house, everything has been beautifully maintained, including the sash windows, working shutters, fireplaces and mantelpieces, plasterwork and architraves.
Gardens and Grounds
Set on c.165 acres, Glenmore is a haven and sanctuary for wildlife including woodcock and deer. Currently home to a herd of highland cattle, there is also ample grazing for horses and ponies, with fifteen stables in two yards adjacent to the house.
A gate lodge welcomes you to the estate, and the current owners have restored the winding avenue, which leads to the front of the house, over a little bridge crossing a gentle stream. The house itself is surrounded by patios and lawns, which give on to sheltering mature trees and in turn to woodlands, forestry, and pasturelands. There is also an historic walled garden, as old as the house itself. This structure has been well maintained, and awaits a new owner to create the gardens within.
The yards themselves also include a staff cottage, garage, additional storage sheds, a barn and a workshop. There is a turnout, and a larger arena adjacent to the yards. Access to the fields and lands is via well-maintained estate roads and tracks, and there are also walking routes throughout the grounds.
Within easy reach of some of north Mayo's gorgeous scenic beauty spots, including Downpatrick Head, Céide Fields, Lacken Strand and the Nephin Mountains, Glenmore House is convenient to all amenities.
