Interior-designed luxury farmhouse very close to Cortona with outstanding gardens.
Casa del Gatto, a stone's throw from Cortona offers a stunning mix of contemporary luxury and antique Tuscan farmhouse. Restored with meticulous attention to detail, as well as lifestyle, the property has everything one would expect from a Tuscan property, and more. Luxury Italian real estate at its best.
Here is what the owners have to say about their remarkable home:
Pergolas draped with jasmine, secluded shady spots amid the Tuscan sun, white roses framed by box wood, a table set for lunch, shaded by an antique tiled roof, the rippling sound of a stone fountain. This and more we envisioned for Casa del Gatto when we first met her in 2014.
After 2 1/2 years of a complete and careful reconstruction, Casa del Gatto is now move-in-ready.
The design philosophy
We created the new open floor plan, giving a contemporary feel without seeming stark thanks to the accents of various niches, arches, and a mix of antique and modern furnishings. Wanting to maintain the house's character guided every step in making design decisions. Hiring the best local craftsmen and artisans and acquiring the majority of the materials locally and nationally was key:
The cream and grey travertine in the bathrooms originated from a quarry in nearby Rapolano.
The black and white Arabascato marble for the kitchen is from Carrara.
The custom made white lacquer kitchen cabinetry comes from the Molteni Group in Milan.
The light fixtures are from Fontana Arte.
The bathroom fixtures are from Cielo.
Two special features of the entry way
The stone staircase appears to float having been cantilevered into the wall with no supports visible. The steps themselves came from an abandoned palazzo. To pair with the spacious feel of the stairs is a custom-made glass table with contemporary iron base forged by Biaggiotti of Pienza. This versatile piece can be used in many ways: as a convenient entry table or as a dining, work, or game table.
More features of the house
Three bedrooms (all with air-conditioning) offer en suite bathrooms.
Ready for future expansion, an additional space has already been wired and plumbed for a potential fourth bedroom and bathroom.
An artfully accentuated powder room on the main floor.
The gourmet kitchen includes an island and a cooking fireplace.
A secondary kitchen houses a pantry, a second oven, sink, and appliance garage plus a custom-made dining table of weathered oak on an iron base. There is also space for storage in a 250cm(8-foot) lacquer credenza by Cappellini.
- A covered outside kitchen which includes a barbecue, pizza oven, an old farm table,
as well as storage area and refrigerator.
A spacious living room with wood-burning fireplace.
Extensive modernization, new plumbing, wiring, heating, floors, doors, windows, new roof.
Smart technology (internet, television, alarm system, remote gate controls).
High-end appliances: Miele, Bosch, Liebherr, Blanco, Smeg.
Every room offers a view that is purely Tuscan: the Valdichiana, Monte Amiata and Monte Cetona, olive orchards, cypress standing at attention, hardwood forests, filled with song birds, and in the distance 16th Century villas and farmhouses.
An interior awash with natural light
Thanks to oversized window openings that Signore Gatto (a nickname because he could see in the dark like a cat) put in place 400 years ago.
On the grounds
Two dominant outside dining spaces. Three pergolas for additional entertainment areas. A recessed fire pit area. A saltwater swimming pool with a fountain. A two-car carport/additional storage. An 80-tree olive orchard. Outside gardens created by Enzo Margherite of Chiusi automatically irrigated.
Easy access to Cortona, trains, airports and Autostrada del sole.
Cortona, one of the most special hill towns in all of Tuscany. Like Casa del Gatto, the city is a wonderful blend of the old and the new. It has retained its spirit of the place yet provides modern day conveniences and entertainment not just for tourists but for its local residents, Italian and foreigners alike.
