Estate Den Eeckelerhorst in the outskirts of Winterswijk is an absolute dream for horse lovers and outdoor people. On a wonderful area of twelve acres the current owners - known show jumping riders with a flourishing trade stable created their own paradise. The love for the equestrian sport was central in the foundation and design of the estate in 1984. Years later, in 1998, a charming and comfortable country house was erected in the style that was common here, so close to the German border. Built with old materials and trusses and with characteristic facades of high craftsmanship, the country house has a natural appearance of something which has always been there. Den Eeckelerhorst includes almost too much to mention.
There are various outbuildings, a horse stable with 28 perfect equipped boxes, a tack room, two washing areas, a solarium and an indoor arena of 16 x 51 metre, an outdoor riding arena of 40 x 80 metre with Agterberg soil, three fenced paddocks of 2500m, an indoor walker and a beautiful jumping garden of 6 acres with natural obstacles and a small pond. If you look at the aerial picture you might also see a golf course in this beautifully landscaped, park-like area. The entire parcel of twelve acres features computer controlled irrigation and we would almost forget it for the enthusiasts there is even a motocross track. All of this interspersed and enclosed by fully grown tree walls, which obviously enhances the privacy. Although you could never speak of busy, because there is no traffic from passer-bys. According to the owner there are only cars driving by the dirt road by the house twice a day: first the baker, then the milkman. This is its location, at three kilometres distance from the nice city Winterswijk, and its mostly very calm. They therefore call it a unique location, even for the Achterhoek. And in Winterswijk it is everything but boring. The largest village of the Netherlands is a lively town according to the current residents, which quickly turns very sociable on crowded days.
This also counts for the country house, which appears subdued, but still features a content of 1000m3! Through use of old materials and natural colours a warm, comfortable atmosphere has been created. This is really a house that embraces you. The mantelpiece in the robust kitchen, with the large furnace of La Cornue in it, the authentic whites and the walls with Italian plastering, the rough natural rock floor in the living room the interior exudes the unpolished, casual atmosphere of a Tuscan farmhouse. In the floor there are five bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has an adjacent bathroom and a commodious walk-in closet. Below the house, in the basement, an indoor swimming pool has been constructed, fitted with air exchange. But there is also a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by a Mediterranean-style courtyard, with olive trees, sycamores and an overgrown porch; it must be lovely to dwell there on a sultry summer day. Den Eeckelerhorst also has the coveted status of NSW estate, with all (fiscal) advantages that come along with this. This also contributes in no small measure to the careless life in the beautiful patchwork landscape of the Achterhoek. This is rightly called a paradise for man and horse.
