45434 Indian Shoals Road
Whales Road House is actually two nearly identical ocean front homes built in the traditional Japanese style. The homes emphasize nature, wood, and an open floor plan. They are really ocean front, a friendly accessible frontage with privacy, spacious meadow, lawns, woods and a secure rocky coast set on two and a half acres. The North boundary is a creek with a blow hole, the East is woods and the South is a cove.
The homes were built in 1979 by Ed Powers and have been updated and meticulously maintained by the two owners since. Appliances by Gaggenau, Subzero, Bosch, Miele and Siematic Cabinets in the main home. Each home has two cast concrete fire places, one in the living level and one in the bedroom loft. The floor plans wrap around the views and open to decks via large French doors. All the doors are 12 feet high, old growth redwood as is the siding, interiors, floors and Perlin ceilings. These homes could not be built today.
The value of two homes is only realized after living here on the Coast for a while. One home for you and one home for guests. Close to visit but not tripping over each other. The second home may be a vacation rental and has a history of that use. The homes’ interiors were decorated by Sharon Kiss of Ambience Interiors and are included in the sale with the exception of paintings, hangings, sculpture and personal items.
The property is located in Indian Shoals, an old area of large lots, winding streets and thoughtful neighbors. It is a small area with no traffic or public access. Two miles North of the Town of Mendocino and adjacent to the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse State Preserve.
