MAGNIFICENT COUNTRY ESTATE 'DARTHEIDE' FOR LIVING AND WORKING
On a very prominent location on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Utrecht Ridge) lies this magnificent, 1817 NSW National Monumentary Estate, called 'Dartheide', built in a tight neoclassical style. Previously, this estate was part of Broekhuizen Estate and has a rich history.
A fantastic country estate with beautifully preserved details such as a marble floor, wooden floors and window shutters on the inside and outside. The beautifully landscaped garden with an area of over 6,800 m² offers peace, space and nature as well as plenty of parking space. The contents of the country house measures no less than approx. 2,380m³ with a usable area of approximately 630 m².
Buitenplaats Dartheide was built in 1817 by the original owner of castle Broekhuizen, Mr. Cornelis Jan Nellesteyn. After the death of his wife he remarried with Sophie Schuilenburg. This was an unusual course of events at the time because this lady was his servant. Although Broekhuizen Castle had undergone a considerable expansion in 1810, Van Nellesteyn decided in 1814 to have a smaller house built for his new family. He stayed nearby, because he had 'Nieuw Broekhuizen' built on the corner of the Rijksstraatweg and the Broekhuizerlaan. Around 1829, the name of the villa was renamed 'Dartheide'. In 1832 Cornelis Jan died and his son Steven came to live there, he died in 1873. Then "Dartheide" came into the hands of M.C. Boon Hartsinck, a former alderman of Leersum.
In 1889 Mr. A.P.C. van Karnebeek bought the villa, at the time a member of the Lower House after having been Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1885 to 1888. He was the one who had the two originally built sloping roofs replaced by a roofed upper floor. De Jonkheer sold the villa in 1906 and, as chairman of the Carnegie Foundation, opened the Peace Palace in 1913. Then the villa came into the hands of a well-known shipbuilder from Alblasserdam, Cornelis Smit, and in 1920 in the hands of his son. In 1973 the De Boer- Haanschoten family from Leersum bought the villa, not for habitation but as a conference centre and holiday home.
Since 1993, the villa has been used by the Dartheide Institute, a centre for integral stress prevention and treatment. At that time a lot of overdue maintenance was done and the villa was completely restored. Since 2004, living and working here have been combined, which fits perfectly in this unique place.
An ideal opportunity to live and work in peace and quiet in the middle of the forest and between historic estates. The places Leersum, Doorn and Wijk bij Duurstede with various facilities such as schools and shops are within cycling distance. The country house is located just a few minutes by car from the A12 motorway and is connected to several N-roads, making it very easy to reach.
