What is a subcontractor?

Hired by the general contractor for new-construction and renovation projects, subcontractors are specialists in particular trades who provide expertise that others on the job site or the work team do not have.

They include:

  • electricians
  • acoustic engineers
  • illumination experts and designers
  • roofers
  • plumbers
  • green-energy experts
  • millworkers and carvers
  • bricklayers
  • swimming pool designers and builders

They work closely with the general contractor, who pays them per project.

Subcontractors must be licensed in the U.S. state they work in.
