A pair of twin penthouse apartments are for sale in the seaside city of Cape Town for those looking to escape dreary winters in some parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
Located in the upscale Atlantic Seaboard area of Cape Town, the north and south villas are part of a new hillside housing complex called Clifton Terraces.
The apartments start on the sixth level of the complex (which is the street level) and are surrounded by some of the most expensive real estate in South Africa, white sandy beaches, cliffs, and Lion’s Head mountain.
The architect, Philip Olmesdahl, and his team at Saota, prioritized privacy, as Clifton Terraces has many nearby neighboring homes. The angular edges of the structure are a result of interaction between Saota’s design team and neighbors of Clifton Terraces.
"Their concerns were not only views, but also privacy: Interventions of projecting flanking walls, horizontal pergolas turning down to become vertical privacy screens, and strategic placement of landscaping were implemented to address this," Mark Bullivant, a director at Saota said.

The architects also increased the lateral setback, per the request of the local environmental agency, to allow for more landscaping.
"This planting combined with the distance between adjacent buildings, greater than is typical for the area, give the units a great, private feel," Mr. Bullivant said.
Last year, the development company, also called Clifton Terraces, won the "highly commended residential property award for South Africa," from the International Property Awards for their work on the northern villa.
Construction of the apartment buildings will wrap up in July of this year, with move-ins slated in the following weeks.
The Stats
Each penthouse apartment has five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and five reception rooms spanning across five floors, totaling just over 11,000 square feet.

Design Pedigree
The architectural firm Saota, which is behind many multi-million dollar homes in the area, designed the apartment complex to be both prestigious and private.
Amenities
The apartments feature security and concierge service, as well as private entrances. Each unit has a private elevator leading to all floors. Outside, each home features an infinity pool and braai (Afrikaans for "barbecue"). Inside, you’ll find underfloor heating. Home automation and furnishings are available at extra costs.
Neighborhood Notes
Clifton is a beachfront neighborhood in Cape Town, with several beaches that attract tourists and locals alike year round. Good for vacation getaways, Clifton offers access to ocean sports and paragliding, hiking on nearby Lion’s Head, and the Glen Country Club for bowls (a lawn game similar to bocce or pétanque) and tennis.
