Smart home technology turned up in force at CES 2018

Last week, tech-enthusiasts from around the world descended on Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show—or CES—the annual showcase of the latest and greatest in digital devices.

As always, smart home devices were well represented at the convention. Here are a few of our favorite gadgets coming for your home in the near future.

Sony LSPX-A1

The projector has come a long way since high school a/v club. Sony has debuted the LSPX-A1, a sizable, yet stylish, ultra short throw projector capable of displaying colorful, crystal clear 4K visuals, up to 120-inches, brightly upon your display of choice—be it a wall, white sheet or window. The LSPX-A1 is more than just pretty pictures, however. The device can simply pair with 4K streaming services and other 4K content providers, as well traditional 4K tech like Blu-ray players, and comes with a glass sound speaker system built-in for superior sound quality. In short, it’s a projector you can be proud to display at home. In addition to pride, prospective owners will need $30,000.

Foldimate

No matter how smart we make washers and dryers, everyone engaged in the act of laundering knows that the labor is not complete until the tedious task of folding is finished. Foldimate offers freedom from the tyranny of turning clothes upon themselves. Simply feed your clothing into the top of the dryer-sized machine—paper shredder-style, but with markedly different results—and the clothes will deposit at the bottom of the device, perfectly folded. The Foldimate is currently capable of working with any type of shirt, blouse, or pants for kids clothes from age 5 and up to adult size XXL., It will cost $980 and should be available at the end of 2019.

Sunflower

Pair connectivity with cooling for all your outdoor activities with the Sunflower. An autonomous umbrella outfitted with solar panels, the sunflower is able to collect energy, track the sun’s movements (and adjust accordingly), and close automatically when it detects strong winds. In addition to performing all the functions of an umbrella optimally, the sunflower comes with controlled lighting, multiple charging ports for your many devices, speakers and a 360-degree camera to keep an eye on your yard. The suggested retail price for the umbrella is $8,700.

Peloton Tread

The makers of the the popular Wi-Fi-connected, spin class streaming in-home cycle is bringing their futuristic fitness technology to an even older exercise activity. The Peloton Tread is a HD touchscreen-equipped treadmill that will be able to stream thousands of live and pre-recorded fitness classes, including high-intensity bootcamp classes, running drills, strength training and mat work. The Tread, which comes with a mat and pair of dumbbell weights, will be available in the fall of 2018 for $3,995, but interested parties can reserve a machine now with a $250 deposit.

Coravin Model 11

If you’re wild about wine, perhaps you should consider dropping $1,000 on an opener. Not just any opener, of course, but the Coravin Model 11, the latest from the intelligent wine opener maker. Promising the "world's first fully connected and fully automated wine preservation opener," the Model 11 employs an incredibly small needle and a touch of Argon gas, which allow users to pierce a cork, pour a glass and preserve the bottle like they never opened it. The Model 11 will also sync with Coravin’s forthcoming Moments app, which will allow users to keep track of how much Argon gas they have left as well as offer helpful pairing suggestions for their particular vintage.

The Wall by Samsung

Samsung is bringing a massive cinematic experience to a home near you with the aptly named The Wall. The 146-inch modular screen—yes, modular; you can make it even bigger with add-ons—is awash in MicroLEDs, which will give the screen perfect blacks, crisp colors and eliminate the need for backlighting. Samsung expects The Wall to ship in 2018 but has not attached a price to the sizable screen as of yet.

The Verdera Voice Lighted Mirror

A dangerous device for the vain, the latest in Kohler’s Verdera line of products is a smart mirror that offers users entertainment and information as they gaze upon their visage. Equipped with Alexa, the Verdera gives owners all the functionality of an Amazon Echo (news, weather, music, games)—as well as voice-control over the mirrors built-in, dimmable LED lighting—allowing for maximum multitasking while applying makeup. The Verdera will also allow users to exercise voice-control over their other Kohler Connect smart bathroom products via communication with the mirror. Kohler expects the product to launch in March and it will be available in widths of 24, 34- and 40 inches, but a price range has not yet been announced.

Xeros

Xeros is offering a revolution for revolutions—of the washing machine variety. Flooding the drum with XOrbs, pea-sized polymer balls that work in conjunction—like "tiny hands" says the manufacturer—to clean clothes, the Xeros washing machine allows owners to do laundry with significantly less water and detergent. When a cycle is complete and clothes have been properly washed, the XOrbs return within the drum until they are ready to be deployed again. Xeros does not expect the home version of its washing machine to hit the market for at least two years.

Keecker

Sure you follow TV shows but what if your TV shows could follow you? Keecker is a rolling robot outfitted with an HD 90-degree projection, a 360-degree camera and a 4.1 surround sound system that seamlessly pairs with a variety of devices and services, allowing owners to watch "Game of Thrones" room-to-room as they go about their day. In addition to offering music, movies, TV and keeping an eye on your home, Keecker can act as a remote for your other smart home devices. A limited quantity of Keeckers are available now for $1,790.

Toto Floating Tub

You may never be able to afford a trip into space, but you can get the next best thing—although it won’t be that cheap, either. The Toto Floating Tub is not just a superior soaking experience that includes optional ambient lighting and a built-in pillow but includes specially placed jets along the bottom of the bath that simulate zero gravity. This earthbound space simulator will set you back $19,000 and won’t be available until fall 2018.
