Resident at Manhattan’s ‘Jenga Tower’ Snaps Up $17.3M Penthouse

A resident at downtown Manhattan’s 56 Leonard liked life at the so-called "Jenga Tower" so much he’s upgraded to a $17 million penthouse.

A company linked to insurance exec Dr. Reza Abbaszadeh purchased a penthouse unit near the top of the 60-story glass architectural tower at the beginning of March for $17.3 million, property records show. The sales team at 56 Leonard,led by Corcoran Group,said they could not confirm the buyer.

The insurance mogul—who sold his California-based company, Premier Access Insurance Co., to Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in 2014 for an undisclosed sum—already owns in the Tribeca development designed by Herzog & de Meuron. Dr. Abbaszadeh, 53, bought a three-bedroom unit on the 35th floor from the developer, Alexico Group, for around $6.26 million in 2016, also through a limited liability company, records show.

His new52nd-floor penthouse spans 3,658 square feet and has four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms, according to a floor plan of the unit. There are three outdoor spaces, including a balcony off the master bedroom.

The building's unusual architecture earned it the nickname "Jenga Tower."

The building, known for jagged architecture that looks like stacks of blocks from the Jenga game, has 145 unique condos, which offer floor-to-ceiling glass windows and panoramas of the city. The developers also included outdoor space in every unit.

Residents have access to luxury amenities like a 75-foot infinity pool, an indoor-outdoor theater, sundeck, fitness center and children’s playroom.

Dr. Abbaszadeh and his wife, Debra, co-founder of breastfeeding supplies company Simple Wishes, did not immediately return request for comment. A lawyer representing him in the purchase declined to comment.
