A palatial chateau in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, that was built in 1990 for a founder of Architectural Digest magazine has come onto the market, with an asking price of $22.5 million.

Dubbed Le Chateau Rose, the neoclassical-style residence was inspired by the Petit Trianon, queen Marie Antoinette’s summer palace in Versailles, France, according to the listing with Sotheby’s International Realty, posted last month.

"As you enter the main gates,  the beautiful, neoclassical French architecture of Le Chateau Rose rose is very impressive," said listing agent Gregory Bega, who handled the sale with colleague Lindsay Galbraith. "No expense was spared in constructing this one-of-a-kind of estate on the most prestigious street in the west coast."

Sitting on about one acre of gated land on Mapleton Drive, the 11,000-square-foot chateau has nine bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. A 14-foot glass-and-wrought-iron door opens to a grand entry, featuring a 46-foot-high dome topped with an 18th-century Baccarat crystal chandelier.

The living room and the library have Bordeaux-patterned cherry wood floors, which are copies of the floors in the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles. There is also a chef’s kitchen, a wine cellar, a media room and staff quarters with its own kitchen.

Other noteworthy features include two rose marble circular staircases, eight fireplaces, marble balconies, French doors, gilded mirrors and gold-leaf moldings throughout.

Outdoors, there are gardens, waterfalls and fountains, a tennis court and a pool with a Jacuzzi to complete the chateau’s extravagant feel.

Current owner Patrice Tarsey purchased the chateau, which was built for Colleen Knapp, whose family founded Architectural Digest, in 1992 for an undisclosed amount, public records show.

Ms. Tarsey is a real estate heiress, whose father Jason Tarsey owned the Dunes Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, according to The Wall Street Journal.

She couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

According to Mr. Bega, Ms. Tarsey is now living in the East Coast and has rented the chateau to a wealthy businessman for the past five years. Now that the the renter has moved out, "she feels it’s time for someone else to enjoy the home," Mr. Bega said.
