They may not come around personally in the middle of the night to fix your sink or to unclog a toilet, but a number of prominent celebrities do have side gigs as landlords.
Here’s our round up of those with properties currently on the market, both as vacation rentals and long-term opportunities.
Tamara Mellon, Manhattan
Rent: $85,000 a month
Despite undoubtedly having a shoe closet large enough to house a Carrie Bradshaw-esque collection of footwear, Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon has been unable to sell her Upper East Side penthouse since putting it on the market in 2014 at $34 million. After a price cut to $27 million failed to entice buyers to open their wallets, the British businesswoman put her five-bedroom duplex penthouse up for rent for $60,000 in July.
However, she recently had a change of heart about the value of the 7,000-square-foot property, which is on the top of The Grand Carhart building, and pushed the rent up to $85,000 per month. Property records showed she paid $20 million for it in 2008.
Deron Williams, Manhattan
Rent: $60,000 per month
Like Ms. Mellon, former Brooklyn Net Deron Williams and current member of the Dallas Mavericks has also been struggling to find a buyer for his Tribeca penthouse despite its impressive roof terrace. The basketball star put it on the market not long after he was traded to the Mavericks last year, but after failing to find a buyer he is now looking for a tenant willing to pay $60,000 per month to live in the six-bedroom penthouse. He paid $15.8 million for it back in 2012, according to property records.
It boasts 7,200 square feet of space inside and 3,000 square feet of of split outdoor space with views of the city. One terrace has a fireplace and generous seating area, while the other has a barbecue and dog house.
Candice Swanepoel, Manhattan
At the much cheaper end of the market is Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel’s two-bedroom pad in Manhattan’s East Village. The South African-born beauty, whom Forbes named the eighth highest-paid model this year, has just put her home in the Village Green condominium on the market, according to Corcoran, the listing agent.
A source told the New York Post that the new mum is renting out her apartment as she needs more space than this apartment allows. Amenities in the building include an around-the-clock doorman, an on-site gym, a resident lounge and bicycle room, according to the listing.
David Copperfield, Bahamas
The magician bought an island in the Bahamas called Musha Cay and 10 surrounding ones, which he named the islands of Copperfield Bay, transforming them all into a luxury resort, which will only set you back a mere $57,000 a night. Only 24 guests, which have to be part of the same group, can stay at the resort at any one time. Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates have reportedly stayed in the resort.
Features include 40 secluded beaches on 11 islands, a giant outdoor movie theater on one of the beaches and a private speed boat.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Palm Springs
Rent: (Rates start at $3,750 per night, two-night minimum)
Not only does "The Revenant" actor have homes in the Hamptons, Manhattan and Malibu, he also owns a mansion in Palm Springs, which he bought in 2014 through an LLC, according to property records. He is real estate savvy, after all, and doesn’t leave his home empty when he and his beautiful friends aren’t using it.
In fact, 432 Hermosa, a secluded 1.3-acre desert oasis compound, is currently offered as a short-term rental, with rates starting at $3,750 per night for a minimum of two nights. The private estate has a grand piano, fireplace and cocktail bar in the living room, six bedrooms, seven-and-a-half bathrooms, a guesthouse, a pool, and a tennis court.
