Listing of the Day: A Home with a View, Nestled in Napa

This modern renovation sits comfortably within California’s classic wine country

Save

Location: Rutherford, California Price: $3.95 million The four-bedroom house is in Napa Valley, famously home to many wineries including Robert Mondavi, Beaulieu Vineyard and Grgich Hills Estate. From the living room and other front-facing rooms, the view is of the pool; just beyond the pool, on the other side of the property, sits a vineyard ripe with Cabernet vines. Beyond that, the Peju Province Winery and the Mayacamas mountains. “The house has a sense of place,” said Cyd Greer, the listing agent with Coldwell Banker Brokers of the Valley, “the country feel of Napa.” The Stats

The house has four bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one partial bathroom. The property sits on .41 acres. Design Pedigree The stucco house was originally built in 1958. In 2011, the house was gutted and renovated by architect Juancarlos Fernandez of St. Helena, California. A Prime Package Deal The owner, who lives out of state, wants to sell the house furnished. The interior design is not for the faint of heart. The master bed is suspended in an oval-shaped, cradle-like steel and wood frame. Above the bed, suspended from the ceiling is a spherical chandelier by Moooi. Large photographs of a quizzical lion, a glowering owl and a buffalo are strategically placed throughout the house; there is no missing them. The house, however, can also be purchased unfurnished (at a price that has not been determined). Amenities Some of the rooms, including the living room, open directly to the pool for an instant swim. Neighborhood Notes For the sybarite, The French Laundry, Thomas Keller’s restaurant in Yountville, is five miles away. For simpler fare, the Rutherford Grill is just a short walk from the property. Interested in architecture? Dominus Estate — also in Yountville — was designed by the architects Herzog and de Meuron. The winery is a dark, boxy structure of gabions, steel boxes holding basalt rocks typically used as retaining walls. The space is designed to encourage a play of light and shadow, fluctuating throughout the day and lending mystery to the architecture. Dominus Estate is private and hard to visit in person, but still worth a glimpse from the road. As for friendly wineries, there are many, including the world-famous Robert Mondavi, founded in 1966.
