Location: Ibiza, Spain Price: €9.5 million (about $10.76 million) Hidden in the hills of Ibiza’s Old Town, this former palace-turned-modern-home overlooks the sea. Known as Palacio Bardaji, as seen on the original crest that hangs above the entrance, the property dates back to 1730. The home belongs to Mucki Braun, a 29-year resident of the island who owns a boutique hotel and two popular beach clubs. She’s also built a couple of houses in the area — but this was her first historic restoration. “For me, it was a unique piece of art,” Braun said. “I tried to bring it back to what it used to be.” The Stats
The home spans four floors, including the rooftop terrace. It has six bedrooms and five bathrooms. There’s also a bedroom and bathroom in the guest apartment. Design Pedigree Braun purchased the property in 2007. The renovation wrapped up three years later. “We restored everything we could,” she said, referring to some of the home’s floors and ceilings. Since the palace was built against the mountainside, some of the walls are solid rock, measuring more than three-feet thick. For nine months, two artisans hand-sculpted doorframes, columns and other decorative ornaments, now on display throughout the home. Shortly after the renovations began, Braun encountered a surprise. “We found a water basin under the house,” she said. The 1,200-year-old basin, located beneath the ground-floor entryway, is now covered over with a thick piece of glass, allowing guests to peer directly into the long-forgotten water below. Amenities The rooftop terrace boasts a swimming pool with striking views of the Old Town, the countryside and the Mediterranean. Neighborhood Notes The Old Town, or Dalt Vila, is the highest point in the city. UNESCO declared the location a World Heritage Site in 1999. Although the island’s history is still intact, Ibiza has also grown into a famous summer party destination, attracting DJs, celebrities and tourists from all over the world.
