Inside Wellington Row in South West London

Boutique development in Wimbledon courts buyers with a refurbished historical property

Save

Luxury apartments are still available at Wellington Row, the celebrated redevelopment of London’s Atkinson Morley Hospital, one of Wimbledon’s most renowned buildings—and once one of the world’s most advanced brain surgery centers. The hospital was on the grounds of the former ancestral home of the second Duke of Wellington.

Location: Wellington Row is the centerpiece of Wimbledon Hill Park, a five-phase development by homebuilder Berkeley Homes in South West London. The area is best known for its prestigious tennis tournament, which is held each summer 2 miles from the development, but increasingly sought after as a leafy, safe, family-friendly district of the capital. Beyond the gated garden courtyard of Wellington Row is 19 acres of protected woodland and fields. Wimbledon Common—popular for runners, cyclists and horse riders, is half a mile away. The 18-hole Royal Wimbledon Golf Club is also handy. Wimbledon station is served by mainline train services to London Waterloo in 17 minutes and the District Line tube to Sloane Square in under 30 minutes.

Inside scope: The boutique development is made up of just 27 apartments, including two-, three- and four-bedroom units, with duplexes and a grand triplex, which comes with a turret. Sales launched in September, and there are still 21 homes on the market. Construction is scheduled to be complete in early 2017.

Notable: This is one for those who want all the prestige, high ceilings and period features of a historical London property, with the benefit and ease of a modern home—double glazing, efficient heating, concierge and luxury amenities. Many of the apartments have original details such as stained glass windows, traditional wood paneling and stucco pillars.
