Listing of the Day

Location: Orange Beach, Alabama Price: $3.275 million

It took nearly four years for New Orleans natives Adrianne and Mark Delesdernier to build their dream vacation home on Alabama’s Ono Island, located in the Gulf of Mexico.

The first delay came when Hurricane Ivan struck the Gulf Coast in 2004. Then in 2005, it was the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina that caused further setbacks.

Their waterfront haven was finally finished in 2008. The Orange Beach-based McCollough Architecture designed the sleek, contemporary residence, and Mrs. Delesdernier took an active role in selecting materials such as terrazzo floors, colored glass and an Italian chandelier she spotted at a New York City hotel.

In addition to its views of Bayou St. John, the home has many creative touches, including a 22-foot-tall glass jellyfish sculpture, and a custom glass spiral staircase from Italy. The home also features multi-colored, surround-sound lighting.

"At night the lighting gives the home a romantic glow," said listing agent Donna Burns of Kaiser Sotheby’s International Realty. "The lights are programmed to change colors and it’s amazing the way they flash, dim and brighten to showcase the home’s personalities."

Mr. and Mrs. Delesdernier are aficionados of boating and watersports, and they keep a motorboat and two jet skis docked on the property. Mr. Delesdernier is a retired Mississippi River pilot who was responsible for guiding ships through a 100-mile stretch between Pilottown, Louisiana, and New Orleans.

Just a short drive across the bridge is Orange Beach, a popular resort community known for its marlin and tuna fishing. The area is home to restaurants with James Beard Award-nominated chefs, such as Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina, as well as white sandy beaches, and the raucous annual Hangout Music Festival. In the fall, a favorite attraction is the National Shrimp Festival, a must for seafood lovers.
