A contemporary compound that set the backdrop to Hank Moody’s sexual exploits and drug-fueled antics in the Showtime series "Californication" has sold in Venice, Los Angeles, for a record-setting $14.6 million.

It was the most expensive sale recorded in the beachside neighborhood, according to data on the property site Redfin and the listing agents. Eco-friendly Los Angeles-area architect David Randall Hertz designed the seven-bedroom home in 1995 for himself and his family, who owned the property for two decades, property records show.

The compound consists of four buildings connected by three bridges, all surrounding a central courtyard and pool. The home spans 5,000 square feet and includes a media room and pool house, according to the listing with Tami Pardee and Justin Alexander of Halton Pardee + Partners and Tim Mullin of Partners Trust.

Mr. Hertz’s travels surfing in Southeast Asia inspired the collection of two-story structures that blend indoor and outdoor space, a style the architect described as "Balinese Modern."

"Bali Modern meets Venice Craftsman meets Schindler," Mr. Hertz has said of the home, referring to prolific California architect Rudolph Schindler.

The home has numerous balconies and outdoor spaces, including a fire pit, outdoor kitchen, roof deck, outdoor shower and basketball area.

Mr. Hertz used the personal residence as a lab for his green building designs. He installed a photovoltaic solar energy system in the 1990s and incorporated recycled wood and other reclaimed materials. Much of the floors are made from a concrete hybrid called Syndecrete, which Mr. Hertz developed, according to a website about the iconic house.

The Hertz family closed on the sale Monday afternoon, selling it to a real estate investment firm led by builder Nick Valencia. Mr. Valencia, who is developing other ecological houses with Mr. Hertz, will oversee the restoration of the house, according to a press release about the sale.
