Historic Swiss Chateau to Hit the Auction Block Next Month

A 19th century Swiss chateau designed by Stephen Sauvestre, one of the architects behind the Eiffel Tower, is available for the first time in over 50 years.

Interested buyers around the world can bid via Concierge Auctions’ mobile app on June 15.

The property has previously been offered at 48 million Swiss francs (about US$47.66 million) and is now open for previews.

Dubbed Chateau de Promenthoux, the house was built circa 1896 as a summer residence for Jean-Philippe Worth, son of Parisian imperial fashion designer Charles Frederick Worth, who is acclaimed as the founder of the haute couture movement, according to Concierge Auctions.

"This is certainly one of the most significant houses in the Geneva region, whose fascinating history and beautifully preserved period features lend the property a real sense of glamour," said Charlie Smith, European adviser to Concierge Auctions, the New York-based auction house handling the sale.

Situated on 9.1 acres of forest and park land on the north shore of Lake Geneva, the chateau overhangs the water and features the distinctive arched stone pillar design that resembles the foundation of the Eiffel Tower, according to Concierge.

The residence offers 14,000 square feet of living space spanning four stories. There are four grand reception rooms, eight bedrooms, six bathrooms, multiple kitchens, a library, a study and separate accommodation for staff.

A number of balconies boast panoramic views onto the lake. In addition, the property has its own private harbor, reputedly the largest on Lake Geneva, according to Concierge Auctions.

"This is a wonderful home in which to bring up a family, as I have done, with our children able to enjoy swimming, sailing, windsurfing and water skiing directly from the house," said Linda Durand, a member of the family selling the property.

Despite its secluded position, the property is just 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the city center of Geneva.
