Location:  Kailua Kona, Hawaii Price:  $17. 5 million

When your home is situated on a state-of-the-art golf course with ocean vistas as far as the horizon, an indoor-outdoor design comes all but second nature.

Built in 2015, this custom-crafted residence in Mau Loa Estate at Kohanaiki on the Big Island of Hawaii features pavilion-style living with pocket doors that recede to bring the outside in. With just under 10 inches of rainfall annually, the environment is ideal for this style of design, says listing agent Joni J. Metzler of Metzler Realty.

Comprised of six separate pavilions or "pods," the property includes a central great room building, two individual master suite pavilions, a family room, a two-bedroom guesthouse, and a three-car garage. "The floor plan lends itself to privacy, since everyone has their own suite," says Ms. Metzler.

 The Stats:

The 6,141-square-foot property has a total of five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and one partial bath and sits on a one-acre lot.

The Design Pedigree:

Crafted from local and internationally sourced materials, the classical-style home showcases custom detailing throughout. Behind the masonry plaster façade, which gives a timeless—albeit lovingly worn—finish, each pavilion features vaulted red cedar ceilings from British Columbia, custom African mahogany pocket doors, Ipe wood flooring from South America, double-hung sash windows, and hand-tooled black granite quarried in China.

Based in San Francisco, Zak Architecture, led by Shay Zak, is known for its simplistic, timeless designs and natural materials. The firm has received such awards as the AIA Honolulu Design Award of Excellence and Cocotraie Magazine Readers Choice Award for Best Architecture.

Amenities:

Pocket doors in each pavilion open to a spacious lanai (a traditional Hawaiian-style patio) ideal for taking in the staggering views. There are five outdoor showers bearing red bronze hardware, lush vegetation, lava rock stepping stones, and rock walls built by local Polynesian craftsmen from quarried basalt. The idyllic one-acre semi-tropical parcel was designed by landscape architect Steve Mechler ASLA of The Mechler Corporation and includes a large lap pool and spa fashioned from Kolorines tiles of solid glass with gold leaf accents.

Neighborhood Notes:

Set within the Kohanaiki Golf Club, a private club recognized by the Audubon Society for its environmental stewardship, the home is located on the 17th hole of the 100-acre Reese Jones Championship Golf Course and boasts vistas of Kohanaiki Point and the Kona Coast. It’s just minutes from Kona International Airport and Kaloko-Honokohau National Park. Membership includes world-class dining, beach bars, ocean activities, and private beach access. The Big Island itself, with its myriad beaches, lush rainforests, and lava fields, is a dreamy place to call home.
