A former piano factory in London that made pianos for Beethoven, Strauss and Sibelius has been converted into luxury apartments.
After a three-year restoration, the Chappell piano factory in Camden, north London, is now home to 10 three- and four-bedroom loft apartments, along with commercial office space. Built in 1866, the Victorian industrial building was home to Chappell & Co, which published music and manufactured pianos for over 100 years, according to a news release Monday.

Following the closure of the piano factory in 1970, the brick building—which served as a munitions factory in World War I and a Royal Air Force factory in World War II—was a photography studio until the late 1980s. More recently, the building provided space for manufacturing companies, the news release said.
Now known as the Chappell Lofts, developer Hallmark Property Group extended the rear facade, installed a basement and added new floors to extend the building to eight stories. The building’s steel entrance gates are designed in the style of piano keys and strings.

The apartments are priced from £3.25 million (US$4.30 million) up to £8.5 million (US$11.25 million), the news release said, and have custom designed Italian kitchens, wood-panelled walls and exposed brick galore. The penthouse has already sold for an undisclosed price, leaving nine apartments left available for sale.
The building’s amenity space is on the ground level includes a lounge, a bar, a DJ booth, a swimming pool and a gym.
