For Less Than £1M, a Historic 69-Room Scottish Estate Can Be Yours

At almost 200 years old though, it needs some TLC

Calling this 69-room mansion in the heart of Scotland's vast highlands a fixer upper might be a slight understatement, but for an intrepid buyer up to the challenge, the finished result has the potential to be monumental, to say the least. And home to some pretty spectacular dinner parties.

Built in 1834, Drumcharry House—built on 2.5 acres—is set to be sold at auction with a guide price of £550,000 or, in USD, $714,000. You read that correctly. For under a million, the castle-like estate and its 10 bedrooms, six bathrooms, separate six-bed, three-story apartment and massive 22-room basement equipped with a designated area to prepare and hang wild game (yes, really) can be yours. Buyers do have to beware, however, as the structure is in need of extensive TLC which will surely tack on a litany of extra costs.

"The property is a project, but [the right person] will love to bring this old gem back to life, says Rachel Brown, property manager at Wilsons Auctions, who believes a buyer can benefit from the restoration and have a home "fit for a king or a queen," thanks to original details such as dramatic turrets, gothic-style doors, a domed cupola, turquoise Islamic tiles and a towering 12-foot stained glass window.

[It's] a once in a lifetime property," she said. "I've never seen such beautiful or unique features. The house has an outstanding presence inside and out and a buyer will be an exceptionally lucky new homeowner."

The estate is B listed, which means that it possesses regional importance, likely thanks to the fact that history runs deep: Drumcharry House was home to a number of key Scottish military and industry figures, and is featured in The Historical Castles and Mansions of Scotland by Alexander Millar.
