George Zimmer, the founder and former CEO of Men’s Wearhouse, has sold his seaside estate on the Big Island of Hawaii for $18 million, according to Mauna Kea Realty.

The compound was first listed in 2015 for $35 million, according to listing agents Bob Chancer and Steve Hurwitz of Mauna Kea Realty. It went on and off the market for the next few years until it sold on March 20. The buyers, who Mr. Chancer declined to identify and are not yet in public records, got the house at nearly a 50% discount.

Mr. Zimmer, 69, purchased the lots that make up the Kohana Coast property for $12 million in the 1990s from a family that had owned the land since the 1930s, according to Mr. Chancer and Mr. Hurwitz. Mr. Zimmer then had the house constructed in 1996.

Just prior to listing the home, Mr. Zimmer bought rock legend Neil Young’s estate, which is 3.5 miles up the road, for $20 million, according to Mr. Chancer.

The $18 million, 10,000-square-foot house has seven bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, according to the listing. The house also has a wet bar, billiards room, media room and gym.

The property boasts an oceanfront swimming pool and 1,000 feet of oceanfront. The property is also home to coconut trees planted by the original owners, Mr. Chancer said, as well as archeological remains of ancient Hawaiian habitation in the area dating as far back as the 17th century.

Southwest of the property lies the Fairmont Orchid resort, with luxury dining and spa facilities. History junkies, meanwhile, can head northwest along the coast to visit the Puako Petroglyph Field, an archeological site containing preserved rock carvings.

Mr. Zimmer is best known for his work with Men’s Wearhouse and his appearances in the men’s apparel chain’s commercials with the tagline: "You’re gonna like the way you look. I guarantee it."

Mr. Zimmer left Men’s Wearhouse in 2013, and since then founded Generation Tux, an online men’s formalwear rental company. Mr. Zimmer did not respond to request for comment.

The sale was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.
