While "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is raking in hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office, its writer and director James Gunn is doing more modest business in the real estate market.

Mr. Gunn’s five-bedroom, five-bathroom in Studio City, California, sold in late April for $1.875 million, just $20,000 less than its asking price, according to public records

The home was on the market a mere month, according to records. Mr. Gunn bought the property for $875,000 in 2002, when he was married to Jenna Fischer of "The Office." They divorced in 2008.

The 3,825-square-foot East Coast Traditional-style home was built in 1956, and recently got a facelift, according to the listing. It has a large eat-in kitchen with stone counters, plus a formal dining room. There are raised ceilings, hardwood floors throughout and all-new LED lighting. There’s a family room with a fireplace, plus a library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

The master suite has a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a double-sink vanity, a spa tub and separate shower. There are four additional bedrooms upstairs.

The sale was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Outside, there’s a large backyard with a mini soccer field, plus a patio and a pool, the listing said. There’s also a small detached office. The Studio City neighborhood is family-friendly and just a short walk to a popular park, according to the listing.

Mr. Gunn, who hails from St. Louis, had his directorial debut with the 2006 film "Slither." His 2014 "Guardians of the Galaxy" grossed more than $770 million worldwide and the sequel, which was released in the U.S. in early May, has already grossed more than $740 million worldwide.

A representative for Mr. Gunn didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
