A 44-story residential tower along the harbor in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, is on track to become the country’s tallest building, either residential or commercial, according to a news release.

Last month, the development group NorCap received approval on the sale of the land from the Aarhus City Council for a project known as the Lighthouse. The land had been owned by the city.

The new 146-meter-tall tower will stand next to the existing Lighthouse development, which comprises two low-rise buildings of eight and 10-stories. Lighthouse phase 1, designed by local architects 3XN, was completed in 2012.

Phase 2, consisting of the high-rise residential building with designs from 3XN, will begin construction this year with a target completion date of 2021.

Aarsleff, a leading Danish contracting company, will be the builder, with engineering and design management by Ramboll, a Danish firm founded in 1945.

The new tower will have more than 200 apartments, along with a café, restaurant, tourist information center, kayak club and an observation deck and restaurant-bar located at the top of the building. It is designed to receive warming sunlight from the south, especially during winter, and offer unobstructed views of the harbor. Prices have not yet been announced.

The condominiums will range in size from 500 to 3,000 square feet and from one-bedrooms up to five-bedrooms. Garden plots for residents will also be available.

"This is as luxurious as you can get in the city of Aarhus," architect Kim Herforth Nielsen of 3XN told Mansion Global. "It’s at the tip of the harbor with ocean views all around."

The building will include curved balconies that change in shape on every level.

The master plan for the harbor development calls for a seaside promenade with cafes, shops, a large square for leisure activities and lots of open spaces.

At 102 meters, Domus Vista in Frederiksberg is the country’s tallest residential building, and the 120-meter-tall Herlev Hospital near Copenhagen is currently the tallest building in Denmark.
