The private home of late billionaire David Rockefeller on Mount Desert Island in Maine has hit the market for $19 million.

The wooded 14.5-acre property encompasses a swath of rocky coastline and a dramatic, granite promontory that juts into the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of Seal Harbor. The home is one of many parcels on Mount Desert Island that the illustrious family has owned or donated for conservation over the years, according to property records.

Mr. Rockefeller was the grandson of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller Sr., and the heir to one of the U.S.’s greatest fortunes and a banker and philanthropist in his own right. He died in March at the age of 101.

His wife, Peggy, who died in 1996, designed the main residence on the Seal Harbor parcel in 1972, according to Mount Desert-based listing agency The Knowles Company, which announced the listing on Wednesday.

The seven-bedroom main house has a large first-floor master suite and en-suite bedrooms on the second floor. There are multiple fireplaces and large glass windows to bring in the scenery outside. The Rockefellers had decorated the interiors with Portuguese tile murals, painted floors and rustic barn-siding covering the walls throughout much of the first-floor shared spaces.

Peggy Rockefeller also had a hand in designing the extensive grounds. "She guided the thoughtful landscaping that blends gardens and lawns seamlessly with the natural contours of the property," according to the brokerage.

Indeed, much of the waterfront estate, called "Ringing Point," is made up of original forest and 2,500 feet of jagged coastline. A few developed exceptions include a pool, an additional guest cottage and a few manicured gardens.

A network of grassy paths connect flower gardens and a tranquil, circular rose garden, a manicured orchard and a separate retreat with ocean views where Rockefeller wrote his memoirs.

He reportedly owns close to 300 acres across Mount Desert.

The family could not immediately be reached for comment.
