The townhouse owned by the late financier and philanthropist David Rockefeller on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has sold for $20 million, a $12.5 million discount from its initial asking price, according to property records.

The home sold to a limited liability company at the beginning of April, records show. Mansion Global could not determine the identity of the individual behind the LLC.

Built in 1924, the 40-foot wide house was purchased by Rockefeller and his wife, Peggy, in 1948, according to the listing with Brown Harris Stevens’ Mary Rutherfurd, Paula Del Nunzio and Leslie Coleman, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The house spans almost 10,000 square feet and has eight bedrooms, a library, six staff rooms, eight fireplaces and a temperature-controlled wine vault, the listing said. It first hit the market in June 2017 for $32.5 million, and its most recent asking price was $27 million, listing records show.

When Rockefeller—the grandson of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller—died last March at the age of 101, he left behind a wealth of real estate, belongings and art (his wife died in 1996). This isn’t the first, or the most expensive, to find a new owner.

His collection of 150,000 dead beetles has long since made its way to its new home at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology; Hudson Pines, his 75-acre estate in Pocantico Hills in Westchester County, sold for $33 million—50% above its $22 million asking price—in March; and in February, Ringing Point, his waterfront estate on Maine’s Mount Desert Island, sold for $19 million.

Rockefeller’s extensive art collection, including modern pieces, Chinese porcelain and European furniture, will hit the auction block with Christie’s next month in New York City.

The Real Deal first reported the sale price.
