Clothing Magnate Relists Plaza Hotel Spread With $10 Million Discount

Jurgen Friedrich remodeled the four-bedroom Manhattan apartment that once hosted the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and John F. Kennedy

Billionaire clothing magnate Jurgen Friedrich is taking another swing at selling his historic suite at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and has chopped the listing price by another $10 million.

The third time could be the charm for the fashion mogul, who has tried previously to sell his fifth-floor units, dubbed the "Astor Suite" after John Jacob Astor VI, who stayed as a hotel guest in the unit. At various points in the 20th century, the remodeled four-bedroom, five-and-a-half bathroom apartment also hosted the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and President John F. Kennedy, according to a listing for the home.

Mr. Friedrich, 79, former head of European operations for apparel company Esprit reportedly lives full-time in the Hamptons. But he purchased two Plaza Hotel units spanning the pedigreed suite after developers partially converted the landmark building into condominiums in 2007 for around $25.5 million, property records show. (Several other high-profile residents, including Tommy Hilfiger, live in the building).

He listed his home soon after the building opened to residents. He priced it at $55 million before yanking it from the market in 2009, The Wall Street Journal previously reported.

Mr. Friedrich, who could not be be reached for comment, tried to market it again a year ago for $39.5 million. It was relisted for a third time on Friday for $29.95 million.

The homesits onone of the traditionally posher floors in the Plaza Hotel, which was built during an era when the top floors were meant for the staff and the lower floors for the most exclusive guests. The fifth-floor units have some of the highest ceilings at the Plaza Hotel, soaring 14 feet, according to the listing.

The home spans around 5,100 square feet and was remodeled by noted interior architects S.R. Gambrel, Inc. There are hand-drawn plaster ceilings, English oak paneling and antique fireplace mantels, according to the listing with Melanie Lazenby and Dina Lewis, who did not return calls for comment.
