Hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin has splashed out on the most expensive home ever sold in Chicago, paying around $58 million for four units at the top of a new condo development.
Mr. Griffin, 49, the founder of financial firm Citadel and the richest man in Illinois, bought the penthouse of No. 9 Walton plus the three full-floor units beneath it through a limited liability company tied to his company, according to county property records.

The billionaire—worth an estimated $8.6 billion—closed on the units in November in four transactions totaling around $58 million, according to information provided by the Cook Recorder of Deeds. A spokesperson for Citadel did not immediately return request for comment about the sale.
The four units are at the top of No. 9 Walton.

The building’s developer, JDL, marketed the four units separately. Combined, they span 34,800 square feet, with room for five bedrooms on each floor. The penthouse unit has a 2,300-square-foot terrace, in addition to outdoor space on the subsequent floors. JDL did not immediately return requests for comment.
Mr. Griffin has been stuffing his real estate portfolio with some superlative buys. In 2012, he set a Palm Beach record when he bought four adjacent lots for $130 million, Mansion Global previously reported.
