An elaborately decorated apartment is on the market in the Campo Marzio district in Rome, ideal for those who find monochromatic, contemporary homes uninspiring. The circa-1870 home has a sense of personality and place while being in tune with modern-day amenities, such as full home automation.

Tommaso Ziffer, a well-known Italian interior designer, said he designed the home’s decor to complement its historic setting.

"As an example, the leather embossed panels incorporated in the entrance boiserie are made in France, but are placed there because they recall the ‘Cuir de Cordue’ walls of the 18th century that are on some walls of the adjacent ‘Circolo della Caccia.’ That’s located in the Piano Nobile of the Palazzo Borghese, close to Largo della Fontanella di Borghese," Mr. Ziffer said.

The current homeowner spent €2.7 million on refurbishing the home, which includes furniture. He wishes to remain anonymous, but has a career in constructing underground stations and large industrial buildings.

The apartment is on trend with so many smart home features that it has its own air-conditioned server closet. The outdoor shutters, the curtains, the lighting, and the audio and TV units are controlled by the home automation system.

And the home goes above and beyond the popular Sonos bluetooth speakers. "A mirror placed on the ceiling of the dining room vibrates in order to replace loudspeakers which could not be placed flush on the ceilings as elsewhere because of the vaulted ceilings," Mr. Ziffer said.

The Stats

The 4,305-square-foot apartment spans an entire floor, and has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and living room, dining room, and kitchen. There are parking spaces for two standard cars and one city (smaller) car.

Design Pedigree

The apartment is inside a palace called Mareghi, which the famous architect Gioacchino Ersoch designed and built in 1870 for the Mareghi family. The building has been completely renovated, and still has two original fountains from 1870 in the courtyard.

Amenities

Despite the original build date, the home has been fully brought up to the present day with smart home features, complete home automation, and a laundry room. Stainless steel appliances by Arclinea, as well as a wine cellar and two ovens can be found in the kitchen. In the main bathroom, the walls, bathtub, and sink were made by a local artisan using Corian, a repairable and renewable premium decorative surface. The floors are black and white marble.

The living room is decorated with stained-glass windows that overlook Via di Fontanella Borghese.

Talking Point

The underground cellar leads to the Borghese palace.
