Location: Brown Island, San Juan Islands, Washington

Price: $1.595 million

"Picturesque, tranquil and a little out of the way" is how listing agent Sam Buck of Coldwell Banker-San Juan Islands Inc. describes the setting of this property on Washington State’s San Juan Islands. "It feels slightly cut off, yet it is only moments from the islands’ main town," he said.

The house is positioned by the water on Brown Island, a 70-acre private island just off San Juan, the second-largest island in the San Juan archipelago, which is known for its warm weather and diverse wildlife.

Featuring a wooded interior and shingle beaches, the island was developed in the 1960s and has just 60 lots along its waterfront, most of which are holiday homes—there are only 10 full-time residents.

Positioned on a low-lying bank, the property is in a beautiful spot, facing the water and overlooking Friday Harbor, San Juan’s bustling main town and commercial center for the islands. The house’s decked waterfront terrace is an ideal spot for watching the boats coming and going.

But it is the property’s dock which really adds to its appeal. It has a jetty and a mooring for a small boat. Part of the Salish Sea, the surrounding waters are home to a variety of marine animals including killer whales, Dall’s porpoises and seals.

Nestled among a cluster of tall pine trees, the two-story, timber-framed building was built as a beach house in the 1960s. Recently remodeled, it is now a comfortable home with open-plan living spaces; yet it retains its rustic look.

Cozy and spacious, it has a beautiful wood-clad interior, with exposed beams and hardwood flooring. Pitched ceilings create a sense of space, and the extensive glazing brings in lots of natural light and the feeling of the outdoors in.

There is also a large decked balcony, a terrace with steps leading to the water’s edge, a detached workshop and almost an acre of gardens and ground.

Neighborhood Notes

Brown Island has a communal swimming pool but no shops. There is a year-round boat service between the island and Friday Harbor that runs daily and on request.

The heart of San Juan, Friday Harbor has a number of ferry services to the mainland and an airport. The main street, Spring Street, is home to shops, restaurants and cafes. Residents with large boats can find mooring at Friday Harbor.
