When it comes to designing New York apartment buildings, architect Robert A.M. Stern is known for creating timeless classics that have elegant and generously proportioned pre-war style. They are instantly modern—with the best and most lavish finishes and materials—yet they evoke a New York from the turn of the last century.

His latest, 20 East End Avenue, sits at the corner of East End Avenue and East 80th Street in Manhattan. The 18-story building is now welcoming new residents.

"Construction is finishing up," said Nicole Siciliano-Trazzera, the sales director at 20 East End Avenue. "Of the 70% of the units that have been sold, all have closed. People have started moving in."

Apartment 6A, one of the premier three-bedroom homes is "one of the most spectacular three-bedrooms that I’ve ever had the pleasure of presenting to potential clients," Ms. Siciliano-Trazzera said.

The condo has north, east and west exposures with partial views of the East River.

"It’s very light filled," Ms. Siciliano-Trazzera said. "It’s a very happy residence, very cheerful."

Architectural and design details include 11-foot ceilings, oversized bay windows that overlook tree-lined East End Avenue, walnut-stained white Appalachian herringbone oak floors, as well as kitchen hardware and a cast iron soaking tub in the master bath both designed by Lefroy Brooks.

"All of the finishes are designed to be the final say," Ms. Siciliano-Trazzera said, with Mr. Stern involved in all of the design decisions. "Buyers today are very particular. They want to know that they don’t have to renovate or rip out a kitchen counter that’s not up to their standards."

"There have been many, many runs at these finishes to get them absolutely right," she said. "Every hinge has been hand selected, every faucet has been agonized over."

The chef's kitchen boasts custom Shaker-inspired millwork cabinetry, natural Brazilian quartzite countertops, Gaggenau appliances, and a large center island that offers lots of storage as well as a spot for casual dining.

"It’s really a special kitchen—it was all fabricated in Italy," Ms. Siciliano-Trazzera said. "All of the cabinetry was designed by Mr. Stern himself."

The powder room is fitted with Grigio Carnico marble vanity and floors, a Toto water closet and Lefroy Brooks hardware. The en-suite marble master bathroom features a custom-designed double-sink vanity, separate shower and water closet, and remote-controlled heated flooring.

The building will be comprised of 41 two- to six-bedroom homes, including three duplex townhomes and two penthouses.

"It’s designed to be more like a private club than a multi-dwelling building," Ms. Siciliano-Trazzera said. "It’s a very intimate environment. There is no massive lobby where people are traipsing through all the time."

The stats

The 2,765-square-foot home has three bedrooms, three full bathrooms and a powder room.

Amenities

Building amenities include a billiards room and game room, valet parking, 24-hour attended lobby with refrigerated storage, wine cellar with private dining room, library, fitness center and spa, and junior lounge for kids ages 7 to 18.

The building has a porte-cochere entrance with a private, gated motor court (entrance on East 80th Street) that features a chandelier, trellised garden pavilion, cobblestone pavers and a carved limestone wall fountain.

Neighborhood notes

"East End Avenue is a real quintessential neighborhood," Ms. Siciliano-Trazzera said. "It has privacy, it’s 99% residential. People don’t come here unless they have a reason to."

Some of the city’s best public and private schools are on the Upper East Side. The building is near Carl Schurz Park, a 15-acre park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect of Central Park.
