Location: Rye, New York

Price: $16.9 million

With its excellent schools, proximity to New York City and beautiful setting on the Long Island Sound, the city of Rye has become one of the most desirable locations in suburban Westchester County.

A sprawling shingle and stone mansion has come on the market with Douglas Elliman for $16.9 million, down from $22 million when it was first listed with another agency in October 2014. It sits on a private peninsula, with 1,100 feet of direct waterfront on Long Island Sound.

"It has its own dock and you can put a 45-foot boat here," said co-listing agent Nancy Strong.

The waterfront home was built in 1994 by the Norwalk, Connecticut, architectural firm of Shope Reno Wharton Associates.

"The house sits 75 feet above sea level," said co-listing agent Stacey Oestreich, making it rather safe from storm damage.

"You can see the water from almost every single room in the house," Ms. Oestreich said. "It’s just mesmerizing."

The house has 12- and 14-foot ceilings throughout, and the living room fireplace features a 300-year-old imported marble surround. The formal dining room includes a 22-foot-long glass wall that looks into a temperature-controlled wine room.

The family room features double-height cherry wood paneling and a wall of windows, and imported Honduran mahogany lines the study.

The lower level includes an indoor pool and spa, fitness room, additional family room and a game room.
