Location: Santa Monica, California

Price: $4.2 million

Built in 1959 by the architect Ned Westover for his own personal use, this hideaway house features plenty of natural wood and trees outside every window. Listing agent Tracey Hennessy estimates that there are approximately 1,000 square feet of deck space.

"It’s literally like a treehouse," she said. "Everywhere you go, you’re peeking out at trees."

From the rooftop deck there are views of the Santa Monica Canyon and the Pacific Ocean.

The house is tucked into a hillside, giving it excellent privacy. It’s located off a busy street in Santa Monica but is hidden from the road and can only be accessed by a gated driveway.

Once passing through the gate, the house is not visible from the driveway. Instead, the front door is framed by a mid-century triangular glass roof.

"Most people will judge the property by the address first, but somebody’s going to really fall in love with it," Ms. Hennessy said.

The interior design was influenced by the Eastern aesthetic, and grasscloth wallpaper is used in several rooms, including the guest suite and den.

Stats

The home spans 2,600 square feet, with three bedrooms and three full bathrooms.

Amenities

A koi fish pond is located just outside the house’s gate.

The property has a separate studio with pitched ceilings and skylights, which is roomy enough for an artist, musician or yogi to practice.

The studio has a wood-burning furnace and hardwood floors.

A built-in bar and wood-burning fireplace can be found in the family room.

Neighborhood Notes

The house is within walking distance of the beach, a few blocks to Palisades Park and is on the same block as a highly-regarded elementary school. "There are people waiting in line to get their kids into the school," Ms. Hennessy said.

The nearby properties one street over on Adelaide Drive hover around $8 million to $10 million.

The house is next to Santa Monica Stairs, a 152-step outdoor stairway that’s popular for exercisers. To walk to nearby shops and restaurants, one could walk down these stairs. Otherwise, it’s a short car or bike ride to downtown Santa Monica.
