There are only a handful of homes in Byron Bay, Australia, where you can step off your property and onto the sand. Beachside homes are common in this eclectic coastal town, but most are separated by a public road.

Beachfront Hideaway is one of the rare "absolute beachfront" homes in the area. The six-bedroom home opens directly onto Belongil Beach on one side and the Belongil River on the other. A 10-minute walk down the beach leads to the Byron Bay town center.

The home has been recently renovated and has views of the ocean, beach and river in almost every direction.

"There aren’t many properties in Byron like this," said selling agent Nicolette Van Wijngaarden of Unique Estates. "It’s got unbelievable views of the ocean to the north and to the east. And of course it backs onto the inlet so there is fabulous kayaking and fishing."

Made with steel, glass and a lot of Australian Teak, the home has been designed to take in views of its surroundings from both indoor and outdoor entertainment areas. There are two living areas inside the home—one on each level—and a large wraparound deck.

The deck has a fire pit that overlooks the ocean, as well as a mini bar. There is a solar power system that feeds excess power back onto the grid, and good security with an electric gate entrance and back-to-base alarm system.

Design pedigree

Beachfront Hideaway, as its owner named it, was built in 2002 by the previous owner as a small two-bedroom beachside pad, but the current owners did a thorough renovation about four years ago.

Talking point

The wreck of the Wollongbar passenger ship, which occurred in 1921, is a few meters from the home. Today it is a point of historical interest, as well as a great surf break.
