Overlooking the Hudson River and the new Tappan Zee Bridge, River Palace, a.k.a. Palazzo Mare, takes drama to a new level. "The house offers a living experience," said Laura Lavergne of Douglas Elliman. "Every room, every inch has a history, a story to tell."

This home’s multiple terraces and stone walls on the waterfront façade are all inspired by a Venetian-style palazzo. A sunroom with a custom-designed wet bar opens out onto the outdoor pool and Jacuzzi. Between the pool, the expansive views of the Hudson, and the home’s private beach, everything is built around being near the water.  "Seeing the house from the water," accessible from the private dock, "is really something incredible," Ms. Lavergne said.

The foyer leads to a soaring great room, with 27-foot ceilings and panoramic views of the water.  Every room of this unusual, waterfront home has a theme. Some parts of the living room, for example, use glass flooring, rather than wood, and there is even an aquarium in the floor. The current owner worked with a lighting architect to maximize the sense of play that characterizes the home.

Filled with art and high-end furniture—with many pieces from the 1920s and 30s—, "the house is like a museum,," said Ms. Lavergne. The furniture, she estimated, is worth around $200,000 and some may be available for sale. One closet, keeping with the home’s themed-room schema, is completely done in a 1920s style down to the chandelier, jewelry case, and floor-to-ceiling cabinets, which all allow the owner a unique way to show off their clothes as a collection of their own.

Neighborhood Notes

Nyack is located just across from Tarrytown, north of Manhattan. The area often attracts celebrities and other New Yorkers in search of second homes, who don’t want to make the drive to Connecticut or the Hamptons. Just 20 miles north of New York City, the village of Nyack is an artistic and creative hub with a rich and eclectic history.
