Location: Baja California, Mexico

Price: $8.8 million

A contemporary take on a hacienda villa, Casa Oliver is described as being "like a small hotel that you will never want to leave," right on the edge of the ocean at San Jose del Cabo, on the Sea of Cortez, according to its listing.

Indeed, it has served as a popular rental for celebrities from Los Angeles and New York, according to listing agent Janet Jensen of The Agency Los Cabos, attracted by its private beach and the $1 million of furnishings and homewares dotted around the tastefully furnished property, all of which are part of the sale.

The owner is architect Dene Oliver of OliverMcMillan, from San Diego, California, who built the home for family vacations by the water for surfing, swimming and diving. Their yacht is kept in the Puerto Los Cabos marina close by. He chose the plot because of its direct access to the beach, and its design makes the most of its view and location on the beach, according to Ms. Jensen.

Floor-to-ceiling windows open fully to outdoor patios, other living areas blend the indoors with the exterior, with one wall open to the sea view through arches. The master bedroom has a large two-person shower, opening out to the swimming pool and ocean. The home is built around a sunny interior limestone courtyard shaded with trees.

Beamed ceilings and wood doors are made of cedar.

Furnishes and fixtures are all very high end, from Christian Liaigre, Flexform, Holly Hunt, Armani Casa and Phillipe Starck, selected with the help of Jules Wilson, a San Diego based designer.

Stats

Casa Oliver is 17,000 square feet, set over nearly one-third of an acre, with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

Amenities

Overlooking the sand is a 100-foot swimming pool and hot tub, mosaic tiled in glass. The master suite also has an en-suite bath by the poolside, a walk-in closet and connecting library.

The courtyard is surrounded by four guest suites. On the lower level there is a three-car garage.

Upstairs is all about "entertainment, relaxation and expression" with a 16-seat theater, full spa, art room and fitness room.

The upper level patio, with fireplace, is for stargazing. "Puerto Los Cabos is away from the sounds and lights of the town of San Jose del Cabo," Ms. Jensen said. "The desert sky offers starry nights and you can watch the sun and moon rise to the east over the Sea of Cortez."

Neighborhood notes

The estate of Casa Oliver is in the gated neighborhood of Fundadores, on the 2,000 acre resort of Puerto Los Cabos.

Within two and a half hours you can get to many Southern U.S. cities, Ms. Jensen said, including Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego, California and Dallas.

The resort has four miles of oceanfront, a 500 slip marina and Greg Norman- and Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. Private homeowners can use the beach club, steps from Casa Oliver.

About 10 minutes away is the colonial town of San Jose del Cabo, which, Ms. Jensen said, has a small town feel "with artisan shops, a town plaza and great restaurants."

"There are numerous well known owners in the area. The privacy and laid back environment allows even A-List guests and owners to maintain a low profile," she said. "Owners and guests include well known designers, hoteliers, pro athletes, and actors, from many countries."
