There are few addresses more prestigious than Chelsea’s Carlyle Square, a street that frequently ranks as one of the most expensive in a city with some of the priciest real estate in the world. While the finish of this house is “exceptional,” said listing agent James Pace of Knight Frank, the real selling point is its location.

Situated just off King’s Road, Carlyle Square is known for manicured gardens that are open only to the neighborhood’s well-heeled residents. The area can’t be directly accessed by car, which makes it “exceptionally quiet,” Pace said. The neighborhood also has its own security patrol.

The Stats

The 5,100-square-foot townhouse has six bedrooms, all of which have en suite bathrooms. There’s a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living rooms, a home theater and a gym.

Design Pedigree

The home was recently rebuilt by property developers who previously focused on London’s posh Mayfair neighborhood.

The Victorian house features sash windows, high ceilings and cornicing. The developers added modern touches, such as a skylight in the finished basement. The house is fitted with high-spec gadgets and finishes, including a Mitsubishi air conditioning system with iPad control, a Gaggenau kitchen with a warming drawer and a built-in coffee machine, Miele wine coolers and a Sonos multi-room music system.

Celebrity Cachet

Chelsea was once known for its bohemian authors and artists, such as the painters J.M.W. Turner and John Singer Sargent. As a result, Carlyle Square has many blue plaques—signs that denote the former homes of historic figures.

Sir David Frost, the British journalist known for his interviews with President Richard Nixon, lived two doors away from the townhouse until he died in 2013. Actress Felicity Kendal also lives on the square.

Neighborhood Notes

Nearby King’s Road is the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite street for shopping. It’s home to restaurants, coffee shops, movie theaters and high-end boutiques. The South Kensington underground station, which is on the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Airport, is less than a mile away.
