If there was ever a form of very high-class camping, this house on a hill in the coastal Pacific Palisades neighborhood of West Los Angeles is a good place to start. The bring-the-outdoors-in design is the brainchild of two skilled architects, Mark Cigolle and Kim Coleman, who built the house nine years ago and have tweaked and polished it since, creating a home that "is a response to and celebration of its site," said Ms. Coleman.

Perhaps the property’s most prized asset is the unobstructed, panoramic view showcasing nature’s bounty, a perk that will always remain, due to the build’s lofty position. "We designed the walls of the main level of the house as all glass to blur any separation between building and landscape," said Ms. Coleman. From nearly every room, and from the infinity-edge lap pool, visitors can see to Palos Verdes, all along the coast of Santa Monica Bay and Topanga State Park, and up into the Santa Monica Mountains.

The interiors are seamlessly fused with both land and air, carrying out the feeling of being suspended in the sky. The home was conceived to be flexible in terms of how it was used: walls slide out of the way to create larger spaces or respond to climatic changes and curtains subdivide or screen areas for entertaining. "The style of the home is progressive," said listing agent Stephen Sigoloff of The Agency. "Every square inch has been thought through."

The Stats

Sitting on just shy of one acre, the 7,373-square-foot home has four bedrooms, five full bathrooms and one half-bath spread across three levels. Also on the property is an 850-square-foot detached guest suite with an additional full bath and kitchenette that is accessed from the main house via an exterior walkway. Below the guesthouse is an open carport with room for four vehicles.

Design Pedigree

Unlike most architecturally forward real-estate listings, the architects actually inhabit this home. The husband-and-wife team have had a practice together since moving to Los Angeles 34 years ago, working primarily in single-family residential projects. When not designing, the duo is teaching their craft as professors at the University of Southern California, a position they’ve held for more than 30 years. Prior to creating this home, they designed, built and lived in the house next door.

Amenities

In keeping with the interplay of indoors and outdoors, the home is cutting edge in terms of its eco-technology. A raised infinity-edge lap pool acts as a foreground to the view, and stays warm through solar and gas heat. A green roof atop the lower level of the house provides a lawn and expansive entertainment space at the main level. The drought-tolerant landscaping was designed to tie in visually with the parkland that borders the property. The lower level features an outdoor terrace with a Jacuzzi spa. Photovoltaic glass, on the ceiling of the home’s central atrium and on the south wall of the guest house, generates energy while allowing filtered light into the spaces.
