A Federal-style townhouse built for Clement Clarke Moore, who penned the holiday poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," is now on the market for $9.875 million, according to listing agent Eileen Foy of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Nestled on West 22nd Street in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, the four-story townhouse is split into three apartments. A three-bedroom unit comprises the garden and parlor floors, which includes a deck and a landscaped garden. There are two-bedroom apartments on the third and fourth floors.

It’s been said that property developer James N. Wells—a friend of Moore’s—built the home from 1835 to 1836. Several restorations took place in the years to follow.

"It retains a lot of detail from 1835, including the stoop, which has a beautiful railing," Ms. Foy said. The townhouse has high ceilings, pocket doors and original shutters that fold into the walls. "They’re intact and they work," she said.

The townhouse has belonged to the same family for more than 30 years. Their daughter is leaving for college now, and the couple has decided to put the home up for sale.

Ms. Foy noted that the three apartments can be used for rental income or can be combined to create one single-family mansion.
