In 2012, a business executive and his wife bought a 3.8-acre site in Quogue on Long Island’s East End. At the time, there was only a small guesthouse on the property. It had views of the Atlantic Ocean at the back and a Shinnecock Bay vista in front.

“It was the size of a bedroom,” said the owner, who asked not to be identified. “We live in New Jersey, and we have a house in Spring Lake, N.J., where my kids and their friends vacation. But all my friends are in the Hamptons.”

After buying the property, the couple demolished the guesthouse and built a modern, two-story mansion in its place.

“We have homes all over the country,” the owner said. “The trend is that if a home is on the ocean, the home is modern, because modern design has large windows to pull the beauty that is outside into the interior of the house.”

Many oceanfront homes are “upside-down” he said: The bedrooms are typically situated on the lower floors, facing the dunes, while the public areas are located on the upper levels, with views of the ocean. Not in this instance. The living and dining areas are on the first floor. Bedrooms are located on both levels. Because this house sits 21 feet above sea level, there are water views from both floors.

The Stats

The 10,000-square-foot house has nine bedrooms, 11 full bathrooms and one partial bath. It was finished earlier this year. The property includes 272 feet of beachfront. There’s also a swimming pool, a tennis court and a rooftop garden.

Design Pedigree

The architect is Stuart L. Disston of Austin Patterson Disston Architects in Quogue. Manhattan-based Pembrooke & Ives designed the interiors.

Before the house was built, the owner hired Los Angeles-based feng shui expert David Cho to explore the site, to confirm it was good for “prosperity, health and family,” the owner said.

Neighborhood Notes

In addition to its stretch of private oceanfront, the home is near Quogue Village Beach—a public beach for residents—and private clubs including the Surf Club of Quogue and the Quantuck Beach Club.

Actor Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, own a house in Quogue. Enzo Morabito, the listing agent for this property, also represents actress Susan Lucci, who is selling her Quogue home.
