For eight years, the Johnston family has enjoyed the swimming, boating, fly fishing and golfing that are part of everyday life on Kiawah Island. Before building their home in 2008, the family had vacationed on the island for more than 30 years. It’s a place with which owner Ben Johnston said he feels a deep connection.

The home has direct access to what Mr. Johnston called “the most pristine and secluded river and marsh system” in South Carolina. The family is passionate about boating, and with a dock on the property, they frequently enjoy motor boating, paddle boarding, sailing and kayaking down the Kiawah River.

“Living on the river, you not only see the wildlife of Kiawah, but you become immersed in the island’s nature and wild beauty,” Mr. Johnston said.

Inside, the three-story home has a reverse floor plan with the main living areas on the second and third floors. There are three guest suites on the first floor. The second floor offers views of the river, the neighboring islands and storybook sunsets. Designed by architect Skip Wallace, the home was built to maximize these views from the kitchen, dining area, living rooms and bedrooms.

The Stats

The 7,427-square-foot home has six bedrooms, five bathrooms and two partial baths. There are nearly 3,000 square feet of decking with river views, plus a four-car garage.

Amenities

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, the home has access to the riverfront and includes a private dock with a boatlift.

Inside, there’s an elevator that services all three floors, as well as a gym.

Neighborhood Notes

“Few places on earth can even compare to the golf mecca that is Kiawah Island,” Mr. Johnston said.

There are nine golf courses on the island. Seven are owned and operated by the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, including the private Ocean Course, which was designed by Pete Dye in 1991. The course has hosted the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship and Senior PGA Championship.

The private Kiawah Island Club, home to the Tom Watson-designed Cassique Golf Course, is minutes away.

The home is situated in the Rhett’s Bluff neighborhood, where wildlife sightings on land and sea are plentiful. It’s not unusual to spot dolphin, tailing redfish, sea turtles, otters, mink, deer, eagles and osprey.

“This house has been our diving board into a world which is rarely experienced by others,” Mr. Johnston said. “In our Kiawah backyard, we live that moment like no other.”

The city of Charleston is 25 miles away and about 40 minutes by car or boat.
