SAVILLS

Price: $1.2 million

While this is the least expensive castle on the list, at just over $1 million, there is a slight catch: The new owner of the 40-bedroom Carbisdale Castle, in the Scottish Highlands will have to foot the bill for renovations and some much-needed repairs—and might also want to hire an exorcist. That is because the castle has a resident ghost, known as Betty, who is said to roam the halls dressed in white.

Château de Castille, Provence, France

SOTHEBY'S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

Price: Upon request

Located in Provence in the south of France, this château dates to the 13th century, but perhaps the most interesting thing to happen to it occurred in the 20th century. When British art historian and collector Douglas Cooper bought the castle in 1950, Pablo Picasso became a frequent visitor and left his mark in the form of five frescoes that were sandblasted into the walls. These have been classified, together with other parts of the castle, as “historic monuments” by the French government.

Some six million viewers watched as the castle was reconstructed as a family home with grand reception rooms and bedrooms, modern amenities and sweeping views over the tranquil North Yorkshire countryside.
