Compost Grows in Brooklyn

All 106 condos at Pierhouse, a luxury development in New York’s Brooklyn Bridge Park, will have under-counter composting units made by NatureMill. Food scraps are added to the machine, which uses oxygen, moisture and heat to speed decomposition. An internal charcoal filter quells the smell. After about two weeks, the compost is ready to nourish the plants on residents’ landscaped terraces. Pierhouse, which is scheduled to be completed later this year, was developed by Toll Brother’s City Living with Starwood Capital Group.

Surveillance in Washington

When the Hepburn opens in August, the luxury-rental building in Washington, D.C., will feature $32,000 naval warfare binoculars on the building’s rooftop terrace. The stainless-steel binoculars, manufactured in 1980 and fully restored, were mounted on the decks of battleships, destroyers and other large vessels to observe the horizon for incoming planes and watercraft. They have a range of about 15 miles. (Today’s models have integrated electronics.) From atop the Hepburn, residents can see the Washington Monument, National Cathedral and other landmarks. Located in the Kalorama neighborhood, the Hepburn has 195 apartments and was developed by Lowe Enterprises and National Real Estate Advisors.
