If you know your wine, then you’re probably familiar with Portugal’s Vinho Verde region. The area is home to a thriving wine industry that dates back to Roman times, but was, up until recently, little known outside of the country. Today, people from all over the world come to visit the vineyards.

The region mainly produces fragrant, refreshing white wines collectively known as Vinho Verdes; the name means “green wine” but the “green” refers to how young the wine is, rather than its color.

Most of the wine comes from private estates, which are often owned and operated by the same family for many years. These properties typically need some work when they’re put up for sale, which is why renovated estates tend to garner a lot of interest.

A vineyard near the town of Póvoa de Lanhoso is one such property. It includes a fully restored 1900s manor house and a modern winery equipped for winemaking, bottling and storage.

“The house is ready to move into and the green-wine-production business is set up to go,” says listing agent Andreia Silva of Luximos, an affiliate of Christie's International Real Estate. “It is rare that you find a wine estate in such good condition.”

The 130-acre property has nearly 30 acres of vines, offering grape varieties such as Loureiro, Trajadura and Pedreña. The owners produce about 4,755 gallons of wine every year and distribute it under two brands.

At the center of the estate is the main house, a castle-like manor covered in blue-hued tiles. Inside, the drama continues with a grand wooden staircase adorned in detailed carvings and balustrades. There are several opulent reception rooms. Many of the bedrooms features hand-painted wall frescoes.

Amenities

The property features formal gardens, river frontage and cattle-grazing pastures. In addition to the main residence, there’s a range of outbuildings, including a caretaker’s house, a barn house, warehouses and a barn with cow-milking facilities. Agricultural equipment and 160 cows are included in the price.

Neighborhood Notes

Situated in the northwest corner of Portugal, Vinho Verde is the country’s largest wine-growing region. The estate is a 40-minute drive from Francisco de Sá Carneiro, an international airport near the coastal city of Porto.
