For much of the 20th century, the historic Crescent H Ranch was home to renowned fly-fishing clinics offered in partnership with the American luxury outdoor company Orvis. It was here that burgeoning fly-fishers would come after graduating from the training program to pass an idyllic week putting their newly honed skills to the test. Days were spent trawling the seven miles of spring creeks and exploring the sublime, 88-acre property; in the evenings, guests would gather in the main lodge for dinner, drinks and conversation before retiring to cozy log cabins to sleep away the starry Western nights.

After 80-odd years of serving as, in listing agent Ken Gangwer’s words, “the ultimate destination for Wild West recreational sport,” Orvis closed up shop. The property, he said, has since been repurposed as “the perfect Jackson Hole family compound,” and is now being sold as a single property. Its primary structures have been resplendently restored, and its remaining space offers plenty of opportunity for building an estate-level home.

The Stats

The property currently offers 7,000 square feet of dwelling space, split into four units:

There’s the original Crescent H Ranch Lodge, the main residence on the lot and the oldest lodge in the Rocky Mountain West. At 3,300 square feet, the Lodge is the centerpiece and the spiritual hearth of the compound.

Then there’s the rustic log cabin known as the Liar’s Den, for it was there that anglers would gather post-excursion to share their (oft embellished) fish tales. Today, it has been repurposed as an additional guesthouse — 2,100 square feet, three bedrooms and three bathrooms — that comes furnished, Western-style, with a fully equipped kitchen and several outdoor decks.

Finally, there are two of the original log cabin guesthouses, at 800 square feet per unit, each with one bedroom and one full bath. Gangwer also noted that “a significant opportunity exists” for conservation easement treatment with tax-related benefits.

Amenities

Mother Nature has been particularly generous to the Crescent H Ranch:

It boasts a beautiful spring-fed trout pond, located near the Lodge. Private blue-ribbon fly-fishing can also be pursued in the ranch’s numerous spring-creek waters, as well as on the Snake River. There is also a 1,300-acre trail system that winds throughout the ranch, giving homeowners a private opportunity for cross-country skiing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.

Neighborhood Notes

The Crescent H area of Jackson Hole is “one of the most sought-after real estate locations in the Western United States,” said Gangwer. About 60 miles south of Yellowstone National Park,  just 10 miles south of Grand Teton National Park, the ranch is bounded in part by the Snake River and the Bridger Teton National Forest. Wildlife neighbors include herds of elk, moose, foxes, deer, black bears, bald eagles, osprey and waterfowl aplenty.
