Listing of the Day
Location: Belgravia, LondonPrice: £55 million (about $79.8 million) Belgravia is home to some of London’s priciest real estate — including this opulent townhouse in Eaton Square.
The home was originally constructed from 1825 to 1835, according to listing agent Stuart Bailey of Knight Frank. In 1920, the Belgian government purchased the house. It served as the Belgian Embassy, and later became the headquarters of the Belgian Government-in-Exile during World War II.
Since the townhouse is considered to be historic, the owner cannot change the original framework of the house, says Bailey. Additions, however, were made to the interior of the home. The most recent renovation, led by the design firm Earlcrown, included the addition of a basement complex with an indoor swimming pool, as well as a garage. Construction wrapped about six years ago.
The Stats
The 10,516-square-foot mansion has seven bedrooms and six full bathrooms. It also has three living rooms.
Amenities
The home features an elevator, a landscaped rooftop and terraced gardens. The basement complex, topped with a gold-paneled coffered ceiling, houses a swimming pool tiled in gold leaf. There’s also a hot tub, a spa facility, a wet bar, a home theater and a gym, among other amenities.
Neighborhood Notes
Belgravia is home to some of London’s most prestigious and desirable addresses including Chester Square, Eaton Square and Belgrave Square and has long been a favored enclave for ultra-high net-worth buyers from around the world.
Notable names who have lived in Belgravia include the former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, TV chef Nigella Lawson, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, actress Vivien Leigh and actor Sean Connery.
The neighborhood consists of 118 residential addresses, but only 15 are freehold — including this property — meaning the land belongs to the homeowner, not the government.
