Zaha Hadid Architects is set to design a new condominium in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York. It will be one of the last buildings the late Zaha Hadid designed with her team before her untimely passing early this year.

“As the world celebrates Zaha’s remarkable legacy, we are delighted to be announcing her unique collaboration with The Moinian Group,” Patrik Schumacher, a partner at Zaha Hadid Architects, said in a release.

More than a year ago, the Moinian Group commissioned Ms. Hadid and her team to explore the possibilities for the site located at 220 Eleventh Avenue, working to combine signature residences with a world-class cultural institution.

“We must invest in cultural spaces — they are a vital component of a rich urban life and cityscape, they unite the city and tie the urban fabric together,” Ms. Hadid reportedly said when presented with the project.

A natural addition to Chelsea’s artistic history and community, 220 Eleventh Avenue will feature a collection of signature loft-like condominium residences. The Moinian Group is currently in discussions with cultural institutions to be based at the building.

520 West 28th St, the first New York residential project designed by Ms. Hadid, is a few blocks away.

“Given that Zaha hand selected each of the projects that she worked on, she clearly saw something special in 220 Eleventh Avenue. And we’re honored to bring one of her final creations to life,” Mitchell Moinian of The Moinian Group told Mansion Global. Preserving the artistic integrity of this project is paramount in order to engrain the spirit of Zaha herself into the streets of Manhattan, he says.

220 Eleventh Avenue is slated to begin construction in early 2017.
