The impressive estate known as “Landmore” was originally built in 1930 and comes with over six acres of land, a swimming pool and a tennis court—and an intriguing history.

The West Orange, New Jersey home was built for Charles Edison, the son of the great inventor Thomas Edison. At the time, Charles was governor of New Jersey.

It was designed by New York-based architecture firm Delano & Aldrich, whose other work includes the Rockefeller family estate in Sleepy Hollow, New York and the American embassy in Paris.

Listing agent Sam Joseph of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices describes it as “a living piece of American history.”

The current owner bought the home eight years ago and has been renovating it ever since. It now has over 16,000 square feet of living space with seven bedrooms, five bathrooms and three partial bathrooms. The latest renovation was completed in 2015 and includes overall infrastructure maintenance, an electric wiring upgrade and additional living on the second and third level.

A small museum that contains original artifacts from Thomas Edison’s office is located in the basement level of the house, where office and lab equipments once belonged to the inventor are preserved. The museum is not included in the sale but can be purchased separately, according to Joseph.
