When Scottish actor Alan Cumming was looking for a New York apartment, his one criterion was outdoor space. Instead, he found an East Village co-op “so beautiful, that just went by the by,” he said. More than a decade later, Mr. Cumming, 51, is finally getting his garden, plus a roofdeck. As the renovation of a nearby townhouse he purchased with husband Grant Shaffer nears completion, the couple is putting their apartment on the market for $2.2 million. The couple bought their four-bedroom, one bath co-op in 2005 for $1.695 million, according to public records. Measuring more than 1,500 square feet, the East 10th Street apartment overlooks Tompkins Square Park and is on the third floor of a redbrick row house built around 1846. The pair did some renovations but maintained much of the original detail. “We like those old traditional buildings,” Mr. Cumming said by phone from the set of his new movie, “Battle of the Sexes.” “We’re not big on sliding glass doors.” Also See:Why Celebrity Homes Stay on the Market Twice as Long as OthersManhattan Luxury Rents Back on Upward Path In late 2013 the couple bought a 19th-century townhouse around the corner for $4.65 million and started the process of restoring it. With the townhouse slated for completion in September, the time seemed right to put the co-op on the market. The couple also has a home upstate, Mr. Cumming said. Mr. Cumming’s co-op is “a very charming, quirky space which I think is going to resonate in this part of town,” said Noble Black of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, who is listing the apartment with colleague Jennifer Kaufman Stillman. He noted that a second bathroom could be added. Mr. Cumming has been nominated for an Emmy three times for his role as Eli Gold on “The Good Wife,” which had its season finale this week. He won a Tony in 1998 for his performance in “Cabaret.” Write to Candace Taylor at Candace.Taylor@wsj.com
