Location: SoHo, Manhattan Price: $8.9 million Homeowner PJ Steffen, an interior designer, and her husband CJ, who is an energy trader, bought the apartment in 2007. "Back then, it was just a very common SoHo-style studio, with white walls and wooden floors." Steffen worked with the founder of Case Development, Greg Sharp, a well-known New York-based architect. They spent a year and a half converting the space into a gorgeous urban residence. The Stats Located in a pre-war co-op building in SoHo, in downtown Manhattan, the apartment features 3,150 square feet of living space, and has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a half bathroom, and a gym behind a "secret entrance." Design Pedigree Steffen said she had been very fond of Art Deco style since she was a child, and the conversion of this apartment combined the Parisian luxury style of the 1930s with modern home design, interpreting a nostalgic yet charming artistic style. "When people walk into this apartment, they will have a totally different feeling about this place. Some say it looks like a luxury yacht, some say it looks like a boutique hotel, and some even compare it to a cafe in Vienna or a nightclub in Moscow." Douglas Elliman broker John Gomes, who is listing the apartment, said, "Its external beauty is indeed obvious. However, among the numerous high-end apartments which I have handled, what is the most amazing about this apartment is those 'hidden places'—every inch of its storage space has been measured carefully. Its interior design is not only precise, but perfect." Because of the beautiful kitchen, Steffen said she had developed a liking for cooking. "I cook three meals at home every day. The kitchen makes doing housework enjoyable." The couple live in the apartment with their twin son and daughter. CJ is being relocated, and the family plans to move to Colorado. "I will miss the convenient life and the interior design very much," she said. Neighborhood Notes Short for "South of Houston" Street, SoHo was home to artists like Chuck Close in the 1960s. It has since become home to high-end luxury stores and apartments. It also features schools like The Little Red School House and the Montessori School SoHo.
